Havva's Place
Tomorrow we are heading back for İstanbul. Short trip to marvellous Bodrum has unfortunately ended. Still, there are so many places I haven't been to. Not many places are open at winter time in Bodrum but Havva's place which is open daily throughout the summer months is serving only weekends early and later in the year.
Breakfast at Havva's starts at about 10.00 am and runs through until 1.00 pm. The place is hidden away in the lovely village of Gökçebel, Yalıkavak, serving only traditional Turkish village breakfast in a simple shady and lush garden.
Upon parking, you are greeted by their dog or chickens most of the time. Her chickens and cows provide all the dairy ingredients for this little restaurant. Havva grows, cooks and serves her breakfast specialties in the delightful little garden of her house.
Her specialities include hand-picked tomatoes, flat breads, stuffed courgette flowers, savoury pastries (borek) and pancakes (Gözleme). Rich village butter and creamy white cheeses are made from their own cows? milk; All the jams served are homemade, pink quince, golden apricot, mountain strawberry, cherry. The sundried tomato jam is excellent:Yummm!! As is the bread (bazlama).
Her portions are quite generous, you will be continually served tea and bazlama. You have a choice of eggs: Either omelette, hard or soft boild eggs. While Havva Hanım is busy cooking in front of the open fire or rolling the dough on a wooden platter for the bazlama and gözleme her husband Salih Bey, and her son are serving, running to and fro.
If you are visiting Bodrum and if you want to experience a perfect traditional Turkish village breakfast, Havva's place in Yalıkavak Gökçebel is a must, itis only 20 minutes away from the center of Bodrum. Call to make a reservation ahead as Havva and the family prepare breakfast the night before according to the number of reservations.
