Brechts/Berlin
Berlin is considered to be one of the most interesting cities of the world. Since the reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Berlin is once again one of the greatest European cities; Lively, dynamic and inviting. Dining out in Berlin is inexpensive compared to any other West European capital or other German cities. The city is multicultural and many cultures' cuisine is represented here. I wasn't aiming at the'Top Ten' but rather at interesting local restaurants.
With the taste of schnitzel on my pallet I decided to go to an Austrian restaurant. Brechts is in the center of the city on the banks of the river Spree. The location is very good, just a few steps from Bahnhof Friedrichstraße on the Schiffbauerdamm. Adjacent to a very well known theatre in Berlin.
The Brechts interior is very interesting. There are references to the poet Bertold Brecht in a modern atmosphere. The food at 'Brechts' is classical Austrian. The tables are either closer to the street or closer to the river. If you are lucky you can book a table on the riverside in the front room decorated with pictures and works of the great poet and memorabilia from those days and enjoy the great view and relax.
I had the crispy Wiener Schnitzel (Viennese escalope of veal), and my husband had the fois gras and ox cheeks. The schnitzel I had was excellent as well as the ox cheeks with its tender meat and special sauce. There is a choice of wines with a strong emphasis on Austrian and German Wines.
The food was very good and so was the wine and the service from the friendly staff. Not so cheap but worth the price.
Overall, I would recommend Brechts for dinner. If I had another chance I would go back and have another meal.
